Meet Mabalu, a resilient 6-year-old who faced the challenges of being born in a remote village without access to proper healthcare. Born on August 8, 2017, Mabalu's difficult journey began in a small village in the Pujejun district.
Born with infections in both eyes, the very sight of Mabalu's condition stirred fear and stigma in her community. Her parents, Tenneh and Musa, struggled to address Mabalu's needs as fearful uninformed protests from the community became more vocal. With no real medical diagnosis possible and fear of her daughter being somehow demon possessed, her mother became a target for blame and scorn in the community, while her father disowned Mabalu, all of which greatly intensified the challenges they faced.
Due to pressures at every turn to remove the child from the village, Mabalu was found abandoned in a hut by our outreach team, awaiting her imminent slow death of neglect. Thankfully, she was swept into the arms of hope and love upon her discovery by our team and nursed back to health by her new caretakers. Eventually her family came to understand that her condition could be helped.
Mabalu was able to have the eye surgery she desperately needed on her worst eye and gained enrollment in Paul’s school for the blind in Bo. She expressed her gratitude, stating,
"I am happy that I am here, I feel safe, I eat well, and feel very protected."
As Mabalu awaits a second operation for her other eye, your continued contributions ensure she receives the necessary resources and support for her education.
